The adaptation is set to draw from two of Bae JinSoo’s works: “Money Game” and “Pie Game” (the sequel to “Money Game”). If you liked “Squid Game”, you’re going to love this. “Money Game” tells the story of 8 people, who participate in the eponymous money game that is televised and formatted like a reality show. The eight participants are isolated in completely empty concrete rooms with nothing but a set of clothes and a rule book each and left to survive for 100 days. The prize money is 44.8 billion KRW (around 38 million USD), which the participants get to divide equally among themselves upon the successful completion of the 100 days. However, as always, there’s a catch and quite an expensive one at that.Throughout the 100 days, the participants have to purchase their necessities at 1000 times the original price of the commodities they seek, which is then deducted from the prize money. Naturally, therefore, chaos ensues as one’s expenditure takes away from the reward of another and the cruelty of human nature is brought to light.Much like “Squid Game”, the premise of “Money Game” is prefaced by and starts from poverty and a sense of helplessness. Participants are picked out very carefully, usually by rescuing them from the verge of death and positing them in front of an impossible amount of money, which inadvertently symbolizes hope in a dire situation, ensuring their participation in the game. After their first encounter with the Money Game, they’re given an option between 10 Million KRW as transportation fare back home or a possible 44.8 billion KRW: the first gamble that gets them addicted; coercion disguised as a choice. While the characters that the actors who have been cast for the adaptation will be playing haven’t been revealed yet, all 8 players are deeply significant and relevant to the story. The sequel to “Money Game”, titled “Pie Game” takes a much more monstrous form where time is money, which in turn is bought with blood. In other words, money grows with time, and time grows with the murder of fellow participants. Tensions are heightened as satire reaches a peak with human lives being traded for capital.Click here to read “Money Game” in English and here to read “Pie Game” in Korean. Are you excited for the drama adaptation of “Money Game”?
